Senior Press Officer

Main Purpose of Job

The Senior Press Officer reports directly to the Head of Press. The press team sits within the wider policy and external affairs team, which reports to the Director of Policy and External Affairs.

The Senior Press Officer will deliver excellent press and media coverage for IPSE, working closely with the policy, research and marketing teams, helping to boost the reputation of both IPSE.

 

The Candidate

The right candidate will have excellent written and verbal communications skills, a good grasp of the political landscape and a strong background in either PR and communications or journalism.

Experience working in PR/Press for a membership organisation or trade body is desirable but not essential.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Developing lines, identifying positive story opportunities, and preparing proactive statements, press releases and comment
  • Liaising with the marketing team and Stories Officer to gather appropriate case studies for stories
  • Preparing, handling and delivering plans and briefings on high-profile and complex issues, often to short deadlines and under pressure
  • Handling incoming media enquiries, drafting response lines and reactive news releases
  • Where necessary, creating and pitching op-ed pieces, authored to IPSE spokespeople, to relevant journalists, editors, magazines and digital outlets including online blogs
  • Sub-editing, proof-reading and editing copy from across the business as required.
  • Acting as a point of contact between the organisation and other stakeholders’ press teams, including government departments, other business organisations and IPSE’s commercial partners
  • Curating the ‘Press Office’ section of the IPSE website, ensuring it is up to date with current press releases and blogs
  • Contributing to out of hours office cover on as required, and crisis management where there is a real or perceived threat to IPSE’s reputation
  • Taking responsibility for the relevant twitter handles
  • Preparing evaluation reports for the IPSE board highlighting recent media coverage

 

Person Specification and Experience

Degree or equivalent qualification

At least two years’ experience in either press and PR or journalism

Exceptional writing skills, able to quickly produce quality copy for a range of different audiences

Experience of networking, influencing and building effective relationships within a complex organisation

Event Coordinator

 

Location: London

Salary: 30-35K depending on experience

The role

IPSE is recruiting for an Event Coordinator to run a busy events schedule within the UK.  The successful candidate will help to organise, promote and execute our two flagship events of the year – National Freelancers Day and IPSE Awards – along with work on other events including workshops, webinars and conferences.

The successful candidate will be extremely well organised with the ability to multitask and be able to confidently manage the logistics of events from start to finish.  Marketing experience is desirable but not essential.

 

The role will include:

  • Creating and coordinating event schedules
  • Creating and coordinating exhibitor, sponsor and speaker briefs, resources and equipment
  • Manage day to day queries and emails from attendees, sponsors and exhibitors, providing them with event information as and when required
  • Event logistics in the lead up to events and onsite in a live environment
  • To build great working relationships with venues, contractors, stakeholders and national convention bureaus
  • Speaker management including inviting speakers, keeping up to date speaker databases, collating speaker information and being their main point of contact onsite
  • Setting up registration systems for multiple events
  • Source and negotiate with contractors (AV, catering, signage etc) and venues
  • Assist in the promotion of events including updating content on event websites and app, Eventbrite page, email marketing
  • Working with the digital team to create content, such as blogs, interviews, graphics and video
  • Coordinate all promotional material from sponsors and exhibitors
  • Managing the logistics of webinars on offer to IPSE members ensuring they are run smoothly and recorded
  • Post event evaluation, coordinating feedback reports and internal debriefs
  • To represent and be the ‘face of’ IPSE at external events
  • Update event budgets
  • Stand in for the Event Manager as and when required

The role will involve some travelling to destinations within the UK, along with occasional evening work at events.

 

Who you are

You will be educated to at least A-Level.  You will have at least 2 years’ experience of event planning with ideally some marketing experience as well.  You will have excellent organisational and time management skills, and offer an exceptional customer service when communicating both written and verbal to event attendees, members, stakeholders etc.

You need to be confident working with internal and external teams and partners, with the ability to negotiate with venues and contractors.

You will be proficient in MS Office and have used CRM or databases before.  Above all you will be keen to learn and develop experience and skills within the events team.
