A say in decisions about your livelihood
Your voice should be heard.
Too many decisions get made by people who've never run a business like yours. Advocate changes that. Your membership funds the campaigns fighting for a fairer deal for the self-employed. When we're in the room with MPs and officials, you're in it too. And when policy shifts, you're not caught out by it, you hear what it means before most.
What we continue to fight for
- Parental pay. Self-employment shouldn't mean losing maternity and paternity pay. We're calling for parity with employed parents.
- Making Tax Digital. Keep those earning under £30,000 out of MTD's scope, so modest incomes aren't hit with costs they can't absorb.
- IR35. These rules make it too hard to hire flexible talent. We want the 2017 and 2021 reforms reversed.
- Artificial Intelligence. Your work shouldn't train AI models without your consent or your pay. We want creative freelancers protected.
- Late payment. Clients shouldn't fund their cash flow by making you wait. We want 30 days as the standard term.
- Employment status. UK employment status law is a maze. We want one clear legal test.
Why our campaigning matters
Today, one in every 13 workers in the UK are self-employed. They provide vital support to businesses across the UK, making a huge contribution to our economy and our society in the process.
We believe they should get a better deal in return.
Without an official support structure, the self-employed often face gaps they must navigate alone. That's why we take the issues that matter to you to the highest levels of government, from Downing Street roundtables to select committee evidence sessions. And why we need your voice behind us.

As a freelancer myself, a large part of the reason I became a member is to show solidarity, that as freelancers we stand together. We have to, it's the only way we're going to be heard.
