CEO update December 2022: Supporting our members, podcast launch, and what's still to come

CEO update

As 2022 comes to a close, we are taking the time here at IPSE to reflect on the successes of our self-employed community and look towards the new year.

With the holiday season fast approaching, we aren’t showing any signs of slowing down as we have been busy hosting our annual awards, meeting with the new Small Business Minister and arranging meetings with members and accountants as part of the latest twist in the MSC drama.

Celebrating freelancers

Last month, we were delighted to get together as a community at The Barbican Centre in London to celebrate the UK’s freelancers. The awards celebrate the achievements of the UK’s brightest and best freelancers, as well as organisations who do the most to support the self-employed.

The extremely witty Paul Sinha hosted the evening and announced the winners for the eight categories and after the award ceremony, everyone gathered in the beautiful conservatory, a tropical oasis of plants, and enjoyed celebrating as a community with some light refreshments.

On behalf of everyone here at IPSE, we would like to congratulate the winners and thank everyone who took part in showing off the very best of the self-employed community!

Representing your interests in the heart of government

IPSE’s Director of Policy, Andy Chamberlain, recently met with the new Small Business Minister, Kevin Hollinrake. It wasn’t at all clear we would be getting a Small Business Minister for the first few days of Rishi Sunak’s Premiership. We and many other groups pushed for it and we are delighted to see the position has now been filled, though we still think the Minister should attend Cabinet. Andy raised the disappointment felt across the sector by the government’s U-turn on IR35 and the need for the government to show its support for the UK’s very smallest businesses. We look forward to working more closely with Mr Hollinrake in 2023.

Supporting our members

The ongoing Managed Service Company (MSC) saga continues and a handful of IPSE members unfortunately remain embroiled. This month we met with external experts on MSC rules, one of the accountancy companies caught up in the investigation, hosted a meeting of our affected members and attended a preliminary hearing for a judicial review. Unfortunately that route to challenge HMRC was denied by the judge, but the fight goes on. To learn more about the Managed Service Company legislation and the impact it could have on your business, see our MSC Hub.

Freelance Corner podcast launch

Have your say

I would like to thank our members for getting involved in the recent General Meeting and voicing your thoughts – the resulting changes to our Articles of Association can be found here. We have also recently launched our membership survey and we hope you can spare around seven minutes to complete it. Our members are at the heart of everything we do and your feedback enables us to identify areas where we can make changes and improve, so please complete the survey.

Thank you and Merry Christmas!

The start of 2023 will see a number of improvements to the IPSE membership. We’ll be adding exciting additional products for members to benefit from. We will also be tweaking and improving the protection packages, ensuring it’s clear to all that IPSE is a home for all self-employed people. Keep an eye out in the new year for more detailed information.

As ever, thank you for your continued support and on behalf of everyone here at IPSE, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
