Here's how clients get away with paying freelancers later
IPSE's Fred Hicks looks at the real reasons why freelancer invoices get paid late and the change we're campaigning for.

The IPSE Freelancer Awards 2023 are fast approaching, and with that comes the excitement of celebrating the achievements of the UK's brightest and best freelancers, as well as the organisations that do the most to support them.
We’ll soon be taking the glass lifts up to the spectacular Landing Forty Two – the UK's highest dedicated events space situated on the 42nd floor of 'The Cheesegrater', central London.
There, between drinks, nibbles, and live entertainment, we’ll gather to crown this year’s winners across 12 categories. In this ceremony hosted by Scottish television presenter and journalist, Kaye Adams, we’ll hear of the outstanding calibre of the finalists, and learn the inspiring stories of their successes.
The IPSE Freelancer Awards are a fantastic opportunity to network with other freelancers, to celebrate the achievements of the self-employed, and to be inspired by the stories of the winners.
As Vicks Rodwell, the IPSE representative on this year’s judging panel, said: "As the Director of Membership at IPSE I came away from the judging day with an immense level of pride at the significant talent demonstrated by the shortlist. It reinforces the deep belief I have that self-employment is a fantastically rewarding career choice for those that embrace it. I’d encourage anyone to join us at the awards ceremony and enjoy being part of our vibrant community!"
Simon Moore, Freelance writer and editor, Moore News Ltd, was equally impressed with the calibre of the submissions as one of our judges: "Having put in almost two decades as a media freelancer, editor and journalist, I was close to imagining I’d seen it all. How wrong I was! The calibre, dedication, skill and passion of the IPSE Awards 2023 finalists were next-level. My fellow judges and I, plus IPSE itself, can only hope we put on an awards ceremony on July 6th that does this talented bunch of self-employed individuals justice. One thing’s for sure – all those shortlisted ranging from creatives and techies to new freelancers and veteran consultants came across as far too shrewd to pass up what will be an unrivalled evening for networking. See you all at London’s Cheesegrater!"
Sophie Cross, Editor of Freelancer Magazine, echoed this sentiment, saying: "I'm honoured to be on the IPSE Freelancer Awards judging panel this year and that Freelancer Magazine is the media partner for the Awards. I found reading through and discussing all the entries very inspirational and I can't wait for the winners to be announced. I've attended the last two IPSE Freelancer Awards nights, and IPSE always puts on an unmissable and fun event. I love that it's open to all freelancers to come along. It's a fabulous networking opportunity and a great night to celebrate the freelance community."
