A word from the CEO

What’s coming in 2021 and how you can back the UK’s only dedicated voice for the self-employed?

The outlook for 2021

2020 was a difficult year for everyone and especially the self-employed, 1.5 million of whom have been excluded from government support since the beginning of the pandemic. At the start of 2021, there’s no doubt the new lockdown will hit our sector further.

IPSE have pressed the interests of the self-employed throughout the pandemic, pushing for support and – when that support didn’t go far enough – campaigning hard to fill the gaps in the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme. Now, with the new lockdown measures and the threat of tax rises from the government to pay for support, we’re worried about a double whammy.

There’s a real risk that on top of the gaps in support, later in the year the government may try and introduce tax rises on the self-employed – to pay for support many didn’t even get. This year we’re going to be campaigning hard both to plug the gaps in support and ensure that there are no unfair tax rises directed at the self-employed – as well as continuing to push on the issues we know matter to you, including the IR35 tax changes.

The UK’s only dedicated voice for the self-employed

As a membership organisation, the more voices we have, the more effective we can be in our lobbying. So, if you’re not a member yet, I’d like you to consider joining IPSE. Memberships are from as little as £8.50 a month and by signing up, you are not just supporting the UK’s only dedicated voice for the self-employed: you will also get a host of benefits to support you in your self-employed career.

Among our most popular benefits are our tax and legal helplines – to support you with everything from client contract problems to your self-assessment. We also offer a contract review service, as well as insurances for illness and injury, tax investigation, client default and much more.

With the prospect of the economy opening up again later this year, we also have services and products to help make sure you’re front of the queue for contracts – including advice guides and discounts on vital training and equipment.

If you’re already a member

If you’re a member of IPSE already, firstly, thank you for your support. I can also tell you that we now have a Member Get Member scheme that allows you to not only sign your colleagues up to vital support with IPSE, but also in the process earn yourself significant financial benefits. Find out more in the Member Get Member section of your dashboard.

Whether you’re a member already or considering joining, help us bring the self-employed community together, help us in our campaigns and help us realise our vision of creating a fair future for the UK’s self-employed.
