How to prepare for the April IR35 changes

Despite 20 years of tireless campaigning by IPSE, it is unfortunately now almost certain that the government is going to go ahead with the ill-advised rollout of this damaging legislation to the private sector in April.

We will continue to oppose this in the strongest possible terms until then and beyond, but we also want to make sure that our members are as prepared as they can be for the seemingly inevitable.

Free IR35 advice for the self-employed

We are currently running a series of webinars, available to watch on demand for members if you have missed them. The first one was IR35 – Busting the Myths, with Chris James, which we held on 18 February. Chris, from JSA Services, discussed blanket bans and determinations, overseas contracts, and working for multiples clients with IPSE’s Andy Chamberlain.

On the 11th of March, we followed this up with a well-attended Q&A session with Markel Tax’s Paul Mason, alongside Andy again, fielding a range of questions submitted by the audience.

Next week we will be hosting two events: one on how to win outside IR35 and high-paying contracts and another on Thursday on how the market is reacting to IR35. Registration is essential for each if you wish to attend.

At the end of the month, there will also be a webinar about working via an umbrella company, post-IR35 changes in April, to provide advice for the many people who have been made to go down that route.

Further IR35 support available

If you have any queries or concerns about how you might be impacted personally by the changes in April, your IPSE membership gives you access to our tax and contract helpline. The experts from Markel Tax can discuss any worries you may have and clear up any areas of uncertainty about your own situation. You can find out more about the helpline and other sources of help and advice available to IPSE members in my blog about the subject from last year.

On a slightly brighter note, the expected easing of lockdown restrictions in the coming weeks and months is likely to lead to new contract opportunities becoming available and, when they do, we can help to make sure that they are fully compliant and on the best terms possible for you. When starting a new contract, IPSE recommends having it reviewed to ensure that you don’t fall foul of complicated legislation and, if you’re unsure about anything in light of the forthcoming changes, we would urge that all the more strongly now. IPSE offers access to a dedicated IR35 contract review service, discussed further in this previous blog, to make sure that you do not get caught out.

As we move into April, and the new IR35 landscape, remember that your IPSE membership will also keep you protected against any HMRC enquiries, no matter what your current status determination. The Revenue can still investigate your activities over a period of six years retrospectively and should they do this, an IPSE membership means we will be here to fight the case for you as well as making sure that you have all the tools you need to make working for yourself a success.

Visit our IR35 News page to keep up with the latest updates, and you can find more support and useful information with our IR35 guide.

If you have any questions about how your IPSE membership can support you please email the membership team at [email protected] or feel free to give us a call on 0208 897 9970.
