Marverine Cole received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the IPSE Freelancer Awards 2023 for her significant achievements and contributions to freelance journalism and broadcasting over the past 15 years.
In the earliest stages of her career, Marverine faced the immense challenge of proving herself as a freelance journalist in an industry that did not readily hire Black women in on-screen roles. She has since gone on to be a multi-award winning journalist, working as a reporter, producer, presenter and newsreader for the likes of Sky News, 5 News, BBC 5 Live and BBC Radio 4.
Today, she can often be seen as a newsreader on ITV1’s Good Morning Britain, as well as being a regular commentator on ITV1’s This Morning, and BAFTA-nominated daytime show Steph’s Packed Lunch.
Honoured to be considered a role model for others, Marverine has mentored and trained countless aspiring journalists and broadcasters over the course of her career. She plans to continue being a person others can lean on in times of need for many more years to come.
The Lifetime Achievement Award, hosted for the first time at the IPSE Freelancer Awards, recognises and promotes the significant contribution a self-employed individual has made over their whole career, with at least 15 years of demonstrable accomplishments in any field as a self-employed worker.
The judges praised Marverine’s “grit, determination, shrewdness, inclusivity, knowledge-sharing, all of which comes with a smile – which itself is a nod to their consistent professionalism and yearning to give-back in circumstances that for many would be too much to bear.”
