This week, IPSE held our first member-only meet-up where members could to tell us their IR35 experiences. It meant that not only could we see and hear members and their stories: it was also a great way for them to connect with each other.
We heard about members' experiences in the new world of IR35: what clients had been telling them, what agencies had been saying, whether they were working outside of IR35 and whether they had had to start working through an umbrella company. The idea was to connect members not only to expand their network, but also to learn from each others' experiences of dealing with IR35 - including the increasinly common indemnity clauses - and the changing contract environment.
We heard interesting stories of how clients in the pharmaceutical, financial and public sectors have acted since the introduction of IR35 reforms in both 2017 and April 2021 - and how the hiring market across the board is responding to the changes. The subject of the CEST tool, and whether or not clients are or should use it, brought up some interesting discussion and advice, too. Although they were only briefly touched on, it was also clear there was a need for more advice and discussion about indemnity clauses and working through umbrella companies. We may come back to these subjects for future IPSE Member Meet-Ups
As we work to engage with and listen to our members' even more closely in the coming year - to inform our policy, research work and more - IPSE Member Meet-Ups will become an increasingly useful tool for us.
