Downing Street is once again gaining a new resident. The safe money is on Andy Burnham – former Manchester Mayor, newly elected MP, and the frontrunner to become our next Prime Minister.

The challenges he inherits are significant. Economic growth is weak, business confidence is low, and unemployment is historically high. But there are 4.4 million self-employed people in the UK who have very little idea where they stand in what comes next.

We've heard positive noises from Burnham on employer's National Insurance, business rates and the personal allowance. But what's less clear is whether the self-employed will have a proper, recognised place in his government's plans for the economy and the labour market.

Join IPSE's Managing Director, Vicks Rodwell, and Head of Policy and Research, Josh Toovey, for a frank look at what the last two years of Labour government have and haven't delivered for the self-employed, and what we want to see from whoever moves into No. 10.

What we will be covering:

  • The Labour record: what has actually changed for contractors and freelancers since July 2024, and what was promised but never delivered
  • What we want from day one: the immediate steps a new government could take to make self-employment easier
  • Late payment: legislation is moving through Parliament. Will it actually shift the dial for freelancers waiting on invoices?
  • IR35 and employment status: where things stand, what is still broken, and what needs to change
  • Making Tax Digital: awareness levels and what we’re calling for
  • Parental leave: the government's review is ongoing but will government still be willing to act?

And as always, we will answer your questions.
