On Wednesday 25 April, IPSE and the think tank Demos hosted a landmark policy conference Modern Working: The Age of Self-Employment in the heart of Westminster.

Headline speakers included Rt. Hon Elizabeth Truss MP and the Rt. Hon Iain Duncan Smith MP, as well as representatives from Uber and Google, to The Times and Not On The High Street. The conference explored a range of key issues pertaining to the rise of self-employment in the modern economy, including:

  • A new report: Free Radicals: why self-employment has risen in Britain and how we should support it;
  • Brexit: In conversation, hosted by Philip Collins and featuring Sir Vince Cable MP and Iain Duncan Smith MP;
  • Security for the self-employed: the value and challenges of self-employment in later life;
  • The future of work, and a Dragons' Den-themed interactive session

IPSE and Demos’ joint conference - sponsored by Uber and Travers Smith - brought together some of the nation’s most dynamic, resourceful and creative entrepreneurs and self-employed professionals, alongside leading policy-makers, business figures and the media, to debate the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing our labour market.

Highlights of the conference are available above.
