Counsellor Emma-Jane Lovell was described by judges as being “nothing short of a ‘guru’ on mental health, wellness and physical wellbeing” after winning the Wellbeing Award at the IPSE Freelancer Awards 2023.
The Wellbeing Award celebrates those who have prioritised and raised awareness about mental health and wellbeing in the freelance community.
Emma-Jane began offering low-cost counselling services after launching One Step Counselling and Mental Health Services in 2019, making private counselling service accessible to swathes of people who were previously unable to afford it, including referrals by charities and local authorities.
Emma-Jane then launched her second venture, The Mental Health Yogi, in 2020 after training as a yoga teacher during lockdown. She continues to offer free, donation-only yoga classes to adults and children and has since hosted three low-cost retreats focused on yoga, meditation and mental health.
Offering low-cost services has sometimes meant incurring a financial loss – but it has always been worth it to see the difference her services have made for her clients.
The judges added that Emma-Jane “has an unflinching focus on making such important mind and body services engaging, accessible, and most importantly, affordable for all.”
