Video and podcast producer Steve Folland was named 2023’s Community Champion at the IPSE Freelancer Awards for an entry that the judges said “really embodied what it meant to run a community”.
The Community Champion Award celebrates groups that go above and beyond to help freelancers with advice and guidance, as well as with creating new connections, clients or business.
Being the only person he knew who was freelance, Steve launched the Being Freelance podcast – and from that, the community – to connect with freelancers around the world, with a mission to show that being in business can be friendly, kind, supportive and fun.
Through the Being Freelance community, Steve connects freelancers by hosting live Q&As, shows and podcasts, as well as a book club, mastermind club and meet-ups, all whilst providing a space to ask questions, share wins and sense-check ideas.
He also runs the ‘Non Employee of the Week’ awards, a weekly live show to encourage freelancers to celebrate their wins.
The judges said that Steve and Being Freelance “really embodied what it meant to run a community. They are very focused on supporting freelancers and their businesses while creating a community by connecting the people in it to one another in a variety of impressive and innovative ways."
