The self-employed are the smallest of small businesses. They have no staff, no accounts department and no in-house legal team. In the right environment, this can work to their advantage, giving them greater agility and flexibility. Often, however, their comparative lack of resources means they struggle with challenges that larger businesses can deal with easily.
For example, while large multinationals can bid for restrictive Government procurement contracts with ease, self-employed contractors often struggle to jump through the hoops. Across all areas of regulation, there must be a level playing field to allow the self-employed to compete.
