Why you need the self-employed: an IPSE picture book for World Book Day

What would happen if every self-employed person in the UK went on strike? Would it make any difference to your day? That’s what IPSE set out to answer in a new picture book released for World Book Day 2018 and endorsed by Tracy Brabin MP.

A cautionary tale, the book tells the story of how a self-employed strike might affect the day-to-day lives of people across the country. Accessible to adults and children alike, it is a reminder of just how important the self-employed are to the UK.

The self-employed are our doctors, our strategists, our artists and actors, drivers and couriers, teachers and IT technicians. They are women and men, old and young – and you’ll find them in almost every industry, embedded in the fabric of the UK.

Corinne Stuart, IPSE Head of Commercial Development, commented: “The idea behind this light-hearted little book was not only to highlight the importance of self-employment to the UK, but also to show its warmer side. Freelancers and the self-employed are often some of our most dynamic and creative professionals, and as their numbers have grown, they have developed into a vibrant community.

“Now the self-employed are not just scattered individuals concerned with tax and accounting: they are groups and communities, gathering in co-working spaces, cafes and even just meeting in each others’ homes. Perhaps most importantly, they are fathers and mothers who can read this book to their children to explain to them just how their new kind of working fits into 21st Century Britain.”
