This event has now passed...

However, we run over 100 events (both virtual and in-person) throughout the year.  Please feel free to search through our upcoming events where you can get the latest insights for your business and the world of self-employment.

A few short years ago, the term ‘gig economy’ was barely used. Now it’s part of the national (and indeed international) lexicon. But what exactly is meant by ‘gig-economy’ and why does it cause so much controversy?

In this webinar, hosted by IPSE’s Andy Chamberlain and Fred Hicks, we will take a closer look at the rise of the gig economy and analyse the debate over whether it’s a force for good – creating flexible work opportunities for millions; or a tool for exploitation – depriving workers of key protections such as a minimum wage. Crucially we’ll also consider the impact the debate has had on the wider world of self-employment and flexible working.

The webinar will cover the following areas:

  • What is the gig-economy and how big is it?
  • How does gig work differ from more traditional freelance arrangements?
  • How have governments responded to the gig-economy and what impact has it had on the wider self-employed?
  • What were the Matthew Taylor recommendations around the gig-economy and will they ever be implemented?
  • We’ll also take a closer look at the Uber story and the Supreme Court judgement earlier this year

As always there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions during the webinar and you can send them in advance to [email protected]. Please put ‘Question for the webinar’ in the subject line.
